First bento in a while--and it's leftovers.

Shrimp linguini on one side, salad in ranch on the other. DH and I are ridiculously low on money right now, and DIL & MIL took us out to Red Lobster last night.

Photos to come!

July Swap from Hezmanagirl/Myria also!

An update on the Uwajimaya issue. The plans have gotten out of the small, city planner blogs, and gotten into the state newspaper, the Oregonian. The article's a good two week's old, but there's nothing more recent on the subject yet.

The six month research project must have finished well, because the plan for re-energizing chinatown has popped up again. Uwajimaya is quoted as being able "light a fire within the Old Town/Chinatown neighborhood." With gas the way it is, Beaverton just isn't a viable place to visit regularly. The confusing highway makes it no more appealing. You miss your exit, and the city gives you little idea of how to get back to the right road.

I hope to see another news report soon, saying whether the $28 million project was approved or denied.

Sadly, construction wouldn't start until 2009. Which means, in 2011, we will probably be in Seattle, or somewhere closer to other things (Seattle has two of the same store)

I found someone who wants to try making sushi with me! Finally, a reason to buy cucumber, crab sticks, and some fresh nori. I'd say we'd make some umeboshi onigiri, but I'm trying for baby steps here.

The only decent shot I could get of the salad. Either the gyoza were flashing white or it was just blurry. Salad had a combo of name brand, out of season salad leaves and organic, in season salad leaves.

May I just say, I am a lover of iceberg lettuce, though I have yet to have it naturally grown. Not pictured is blueberry pocky which melted together during the night. My coworkers really liked it.

The salad dressing container didn't hold a lot, and I'm debating hunting down one of those surgical syringes people talk about. Because I like my dressing.

Upper container: Pork gyoza from Trader Joe's (need to get a steamer so I can make batches of my own to freeze!), and leftover Taco Bell chicken quesadilla (Bought it for DH, then he wasn't hungry).
Lower container: chunks of mandarin oranges in disposable cup, slices of baby carrots (store brand, still industrial growth), and broccoli (organic, also store bought)

My lesson for tonight was that the food tastes slightly different without the layers of corn seasoning the food, and that my taste buds will need to adjust. I also think I will need to invest in a slightly larger box. Something closer to 600-700ml. The 480 just isn't enough, cute as it is.

Signed up for the bento swap on flickr. Can't wait to see who I get!

DH asked me bewildered last night, "Why didn't you just ask?" Within seconds, he'd produced the exact cable I needed to hook up to the computer. So Nursery Bento #2 & 3 are now up.

He took pictures of our not so little kittens. Spaz is the one that deigned to look at the camera. Tiny's still camera shy.

DH likes having them sleep next to him as he plays WoW.

Subject:Musings on Food

As usual, I have discovered the fad a good year or so late. However, missing Twilight for a couple of years wasn't as important as the Michael Pollan books.

Due to Twilight's relevant health balances, and insane popularity, I don't think saving my money really hurt Stephenie Meyer too much.

The following blog is about where to buy food, what actually constitutes food, and how to choose what to put into one's body.

I don't feel I made any real conclusive statement, there was no thesis statement, just some musings. I may alter this as time goes on. I just want to remember that I don't intend to take Michael Pollan's words as God. But I don't intend on discrediting him for challenging my beliefs, either.

Off topic, but I still can't make cookies. I made a batch directly following instructions, with someone who knows cookies over my shoulder, and they still came out flat. One, I should have halved the recipe, and two, I believe I need to buy some cookie shapers. My cookies are much too huge. DH has promised to help me make cookie sized drops next time. Next time will have to wait until I can justify buying eggs.

For now, I need to throw out expired food from the fridge, and wash the bento boxes!

Last night's nursery bento. Brought cute bread shapes for Little S, and and mandarin orange chunks for Little D and Big S. And then, no one showed up. Sadness.

Oh well, due to some IRL work issues, I learned about some job opportunities if I ever decide to leave the theater. I don't plan on doing that anytime soon, but it's nice to know I have alternatives if it ever comes to that.

Of course, on the way home, the reason I was asking disappeared. My father always advised me to keep my foot in the market, just in case.

Alternative First Choice

Hey guys,
Just thought I'd let you guys know the website's been updated, so the links actually work, and the main page and history of my bento are done. You can also see a list of useful reference links.

http://bento.amy-lynn.net/

I hope to have some recipes and and the misc/accessories page done by Thursday. I work three shifts to go between now and then, so we'll see how that goes. Time for work!

I've narrowed my j-list purchase down to $70 (including shipping). All that's left is to wait until Friday, and hope every thing's still in stock.

Long time no update, ne?

Well, this bento came up yesterday. And it sat in the work fridge all night, so I hope to actually eat it today!

Two provolone and balogna sandwiches. Broccoli, carrots, and snow peas with ranch dipping. Pocky for dessert!

And even kitties get excited about food! I think husband learned not to leave the kitty food on the floor.

The work full of sickies has struck again. Something is swollen. Something I could have the doctor look at, tell me isn't strep, then advise tea and soup. So I'll save the gas and slurp the soup.

Today's lunch goes unpictured as it was simply health food from the supermarket. Single servings of orange juice and organic fruit shakes, and some carrots and mandarin oranges for snacks.

Hopefully, bento will return next week!

Tonight, I'm getting ahead. I'm going to cut some cute shapes of white bread for little S, sprinkle some brown sugar on some strawberries for Big S, and make sure I have enough raspberries for Little D.

It is 1 AM as I write this, and I am starting now.

Two am, finished.

EDIT: Well, the bread went real fast. Big S was still on vacation, so the meat and cheese didn't get eaten. At all.
